The Board of Education is aware that a Shadyside resident is soliciting online input from community members, through allegedly anonymous surveys and complaints, about various District matters, which she intends to present to the Board for action. Be advised that this individual is not an employee, representative, or agent of the District, and that she has not been authorized to engage in these activities for or on behalf of the Board. Information supplied to this individual – including any information related to students in the District – is not protected by law from disclosure and could be used by her for any purpose.  

Parents of students desiring to address an issue involving their children in school may contact their building principal directly. Such communication with a District employee is protected from disclosure by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”). Members of the public desiring to submit a complaint to the District are advised to follow the procedures outlined in Board Policy 9130 – “Public Complaints,” which is available on the District’s website. 

Finally, in handling complaints involving staff members, the Board is required by Ohio law to comply with the terms of the collective bargaining agreements established with the District’s teaching and non-teaching unions. Be advised that those agreements prohibit anonymous/unsigned letters or materials from being placed in personnel files. 

The Board appreciates the community’s interest in its activities. The Board simply wants to ensure that student privacy is protected, and that legally established procedures for complaint resolution are followed.
